Being original for Valentines Day can be tough. If you’ve been together ages, it may be a little difficult to keep coming up with bigger and better dates that will still dazzle your lover and make them remember why it was they feel so hard for you in the first place. Or it may be that this is your first Valentines Day together and you want to do something spectacular so that they’ll remember it forever.
If you haven’t booked something already (because you forgot, until now…), you may be getting into a bit of a panic as many of the fun planned events are already sold out (EEEEK!)
Don’t worry though. I’ve been investigating and if you do want to surprise your someone special this Thursday, here are our favourite ideas for things to do in the big smoke that are bound to impress…are still available…and best of all, won’t even break the bank;
1. Size DOES matter.
London is beautiful. London at night is one of the most romantic places on earth. So why not rise high above it all and treat your Valentine to the most spectacular view in town, by booking tickets for either the London Eye, or the newly opened View from the Shard.
Both offer something different. The London Eye are offering Champagne and Canape Flights for just £48.60 per person which includes a 30minute “flight” on the London Eye,a glass of Pommery Brut and a selection of canapés, including some Valentine’s additions – parmesan hearts, chocolate-dipped strawberries and pink champagne jelly. You get priority boarding (so no hanging about in the cold) and some romantic memories from 135m above the city.
A trip up the Shard will also be special – the viewing platform at the top of the highest building in London has only just opened, so you’ll be amongst the first to capture this view. Tickets for the View from the Shard are £24.95 and at 244m high, this is almost twice as high as anything in London. Pretty impressive.
2. Something Saucy.
If you are looking for something a little bit sexy this year, why not try a Burlesque club?
Volupte (near Holborn) are putting on a special evening, with a pulse-quickening show from The Love Goddess Tempest Rose, a whole host of other sensuous performers, a three course dinner and a welcome glass of Champagne to get you in the mood. The whole night will set you back £80.
If you’d prefer to stay south of the river, consider The Peacock Lounge – where you have the option of drinking, dining or just watching the show. The theme is “Hollywood Stars” and amazingly – entrance is free. If you do choose to dine, it’s a very reasonable £30 for a 5 course set menu, and after the entertainment on stage, there’ll be a DJ and disco.
3. Starry Eyed
This may sound incredibly cheesy, but my first ever encounter with my now boyfriend involved us standing on a terrace at night, staring at the stars while he pointed out the constellations. Fairly romantic, don’t you think? If you want to lay back and gaze at the stars with the person you love, check out the Cupid Themed Valentines Night at London’s Planetarium. For just £28, couples can visit the Royal Observatory, where you’ll get a guided tour throughout the solar system – as well as a glass of bubbles and a red rose. Lovely.
4. Go to the Prom
Although many schools throughout the country are now putting on Prom Night for School leavers – you didn’t get that when I was a teen. If you (like me) feel like you missed out on all the fun of big dresses, bad haircuts, awkward dancing and sneaking booze into the punch, you are in for a treat.
Proud have alway known how to put on a party and Valentines Day “Bad Sex” Tacky Prom will be no different, With tickets just £7.70 (unbelievable!) and a line up that includes the coolest bands, quirky stars and DJs combined with the dodgiest themes and party games, this sounds amazing. If you’re thinking less about soppy romance and more about laughing and smiling and dancing your way through the night, this is for you. There’s a photo booth, free shots, a slow dance at midnight and great drinks deals. Probably where I’d end up if we hadn’t already made plans. Also be a great night for singles.
5. Whisper Sweet Nothings
If you are looking for something totally sweet and romantic – there’s only one option in my eyes. Or ears.
Head along to the Whispering Gallery at St Pauls Cathedral, where you can climb the 259 steps up the dome and reach the Whispering Gallery – where a whisper to one side of the dome becomes audible at the other side. Stunning – steeped in history – and perfect for whispering sweet nothings. Or a proposal.
Just saying 😉
So there you go. There are plenty of other amazing things happening – many of which have already sold out – but if you know of something amazing going on that still has tickets available please do let us know in the comment box below.
If you’re interested in any of the above activities PLEASE don’t wait any longer and get booking now – they were all available at the time of writing but I can’t guarantee they will be for long!
Coming next? The best things to do if you’re single in the city this Valentines. No moping allowed x
