Tube Strike Woes? Forget Them, Drink Here…

dalston roof park

I never thought I’d say this, but I occasionally miss my commute into London. As a dedicated people watcher, the oddness of Londoners in all their shapes and forms always kept me fairly amused (apart from when being groped by an utter weirdo…But that’s another story).

This week, I do not miss that commute AT ALL. I’m feeling truly sorry for everyone trying to get in and out of work, and, I’ll say it out loud, have very little support for the tube workers at all. You’re doing OK compared to nurses, and firefighters, and other people doing jobs that save lives…you’d probably be pretty pissed off if they all walked out and you needed them.

ANYWAY. I am guessing that after the last two days battling against TFL, most commuters will welcome a stiff drink this evening. So I’ve put together a little list of beautiful places to stop and have a tipple after work. Or three. Oh, go on, have eight…and you might not worry about getting home at all.

Of course – these are all great options for all round summer al fresco drinking. The tube strike is just an excuse…if you needed one!

Radio at the ME Hotel

Radio at ME

Perched high above the strand, with views of Covent Garden and beyond, Radio is one of London’s most popular and sought after rooftop destinations. It’s unsurprising as it’s gorgeous – and if you fancy a spot of dinner it’s in the same building as STK and Cucina Asselina – both brilliant options.

Royal Horseguards Terrace

We love the terrace at Royal Horseguards Hotel, just by Embankment. It’s a cosy terrace with heaters, fake grass and canopies, and you can easily forget you’re not somewhere secluded and lovely. Order one of their seasonal hampers too, they’re delicious.

Bloom Gin Rooftop Bar at Vista (Trafalgar Hotel)

Bloom Vista Trafalgar

I’ve been a fan of Vista at the Trafalgar since I went to the relaunch party a few years ago. It’s a gorgeous space with fantastic views – and this summer has been taken over by Bloom Gin (although other drinks available, of course!)

La Suite West (Garden Terrace)

La Suite West Terrace

Tucked away in between gorgeous nineteenth century townhouses, this private terrace is a delightful spot, perfect for hiding away from the hoards heading for the train! It’ walking distance to Paddington, so brilliantly located too.

South Place Hotel (Angler Roof Terrace)

South PLace Hotel Angler Roof Terrace

This is one of the most sought after City spots, which is unsurprising as it’s a total sun trap. It smells of fresh lavender and herbs, and if you squint a bit, you could almost imagine you’re in Provence, not London…

Sanctum Soho (Roof Terrace)

I have had one or two debaucherous nights on the Sanctum Soho roof terrace over the years – but that’s probably best saved for another post! It’s one of the most rock n roll hotels in London and you’ll often spot a celeb having a drink…in or out of the hot-tub. I bloody love this place!

Skylounge at Doubletree Hilton (Tower Bridge)

skylounge

We been to Skylounge a couple of times now and think it’s rather smashing. Great 12th floor views of the Shard and further afield, this is a brilliant post-work stop if you’re in the city.

Storeys

storeys

Storeys only launched on July 31st and takes place on top of the Multi Storey Car Park at Television Centre in White City, which was home to the BBC for sixty years up until 2013. Storeys is an ace summer terrace hotspot, featuring striking artwork, some of the UK’s best street food traders and killer cocktails in a vibrant, urban setting. Set over two levels and spanning an impressive 24,000 square feet, Storeys offers sweeping panoramic views of West London from nine storeys high.

West Thirty Six

The all-day townhouse, West Thirty Six (W36) boasts 2 outdoor terraces. The Tool Shed, where rakes, hoes and trowels cover the walls is home to fire-pit barbeque perfect for private parties. The terrace just off the Monkey Room on the first floor lets diners and drinkers relax on comfy striped cushioned seats and copper chairs as they soak up the sun.

Madison

Madison One New Change

With stunning views over St Paul’s, Madison is a gorgeous roof terrace overlooking the city. Expect drinking and dancing as they have some brilliant DJs spinning in the evenings (including my mate Danny Healy, who is also rather easy on the eye.)

Roofnic

roofnic

Brand new for 2015, Roofnic is a fab rooftop bar that will steal you away from the Oxford Street rush. Great music, fake grass and a canopy to protect you from any showers….and cocktails at just £7. You will easily forget you’re in the busiest part of central London!

Vintage Salt

This is more than just another rooftop bar – it’s an event space with something on most nights. Check out their calendar of parties, screenings and workshops.

Aqua

Aqua rooftop london

Oh, I bloody love Aqua. I’ve had many a post-work drink here that’s gone on far too long. It gets packed, but if you grab a spot, it’s still lovely.

SushiSamba

Sushi Samba terrace

Boasting the highest outdoor terraces in London and stunning decor, including the structural orange tree on the west terrace, SushiSamba is a gorgeous place for after work cocktails. You get 360° views of the City, and it’ only a stones throw from Liverpool street. Love.

Proof

Proof and Playground

Proof is a rooftop bar in London fields that partners with a street food market (Playground) below. Perfect for East London rooftop drinks on Thurs/Fri and Saturday evenings. There’s also an undercover spot with sofas if the weather turns. And really cool cocktails.

Queen Elizabeth Roof Garden Bar & Café

Queen+Elizabeth+Roof+Garden+Bar

A beautiful retreat above the concrete jungle of the South Bank, packed with greenery to whisk you away from the working day!

So, there you go. The sun is shining (kind of) and it’s been a stressful week for most of you, so you most definitely a great day for a drink. Explore somewhere new, and of course, don’t forget to let us know of anywhere we’ve missed! Comment below or tweet me at @Love_London.
