Photography of Londoners at Museum of London – and it’s free!

Tomorrow (1st May 2015) the Museum of London will open a display of newly commissioned photographs depicting Londoners enjoying the hustle and bustle of city life. The display of eight pictures, We Are London, is in collaboration with TNR, which is part of Press Association, and features photographs by photographers Matt Crossick and David Parry.

The pictures range from crowds of Londoners shopping for flowers at Columbia Road Market to a flash mob choir on the South Bank as well as a trade union march and school children watching the recent eclipse from Greenwich.

Director of the Museum of London, Sharon Ament, said:

London is busy. It’s crowded full with all kinds of different people living wonderfully different lives. The newly commissioned photographs capture just a few of the many of the diverse pastimes that take place here without forgetting that London is as crowded as it is vibrant. The display goes right to the heart of the Museum of London and our connection to the people who live here. Londoners make London what it is, and to me that’s the greatest city in the world.

Photographer, Matt Crossick, said:

These photographs explore what it is like to live alongside 8 million other people in London. The series captures the range and mood of Londoners when they get together. Crowds gather for very different reasons, from the necessity of commuting, to the jubilation of a football match or celebration. The more gatherings I shot for the project, the better the portrait of the city and its inhabitants that emerged.

Photographer, David Parry, said:

This project has given me an opportunity to see London differently, from the city I work in every day. Like many Londoners my instinct is to avoid crowds, but when you stop to look at all the individual faces you begin to see that crowds are like microcosms. Like the city itself, from a distance crowds looks like a homogeneous mass, but when you get closer you realise that they reveal much more than meets the eye.

We Are London is open from 1 May and is free to visit.
