Last Friday we were feeling ravenous, lavish and in the mood for meat, so we went along to Gaucho, Piccadilly for a bit of Argentinian goodness.
Their lunch menu is a great way to get a taste of the goods without having to eat half a cow (and spend half your wages). For £23, you can enjoy two delicious courses, or for £26, three courses – and the portion sizes aren’t shy either.
Between the three of us we got one of each of the starters to taste. Our favourite was the salmon tartare by a long shot – absolutely delicious. The beef empañadas and crisp pork belly were nice, but nothing to write home about, and the shape of the black pudding was a little errrrm off-putting – although extremely tasty.
The star of the show was without a doubt the Rib-Eye Steak. Described by Gaucho as the most flavoursome cut of cow, it was juicy, tender and ever so tasty. To go with it, a side of creamy peppercorn sauce and a big bowl of moreish chips. The menu also had Pan Fried Plaice or Grilled Calf’s Liver as options, but when in Rome…
We washed it all down with a punchy Argentinian Vino Tinto and a rich Cabernet Franc – both recommended by our sommelier to match our steak. Then we finished it all off with a charming little Vanilla Panacotta with rhubarb and basil.
All in all, a fabulously indulgent way to spend a Friday afternoon. Except you’ll need a little kip afterwards.
