Gastropub: The New Inn, NW8

The New Inn is a proper local, tucked away in the back streets of St John’s Wood. The kind of place you’d never find without looking, down a road you wouldn’t need to drive down unless you lived there.

From the outside, it looks like your average London boozer. Standard signage, with a few tables outside for smokers. It’s completely unremarkable.

Inside though, it’s a delight. Cosy, with a wonderfully warm atmosphere, friendly staff, board games for customers use and up to date, interesting magazines and papers to peruse while you sit in these comfortable surroundings, with your pint or wine. It’s family run and kind of feels it…there are good vibes a plenty…and that atmosphere makes it the perfect place to catch up with friends after a long day. It’s always been the perfect amount of busy when we’ve visited…not so packed that you won’t get a seat, but not so quiet that you think the staff are eavesdropping on your gossip either.

The wines (from what we’ve tried) are good – I particularly enjoy the Rioja they do by the glass, and the boy enjoyed the beers on tap. However, they also pride themselves on their cocktail list…we’re yet to try them for ourselves but promise to report back on that soon.

Food-wise, The New Inn is pretty impressive. You’ll find all your gastropub favourites, including fish and chips and a delicious, juicy burger (highly recommended, but messy!), and they also offer delectable dishes such as Venison Steak, Roasted Fillet of Seabass and Pork Tenderloin with braised Swiss Chard too. Add to this the option of bar tapas, a great selection of starters and desserts, and this really is a fantastic option for dining in the local area.

I’m a huge fan of an old-fashioned local and have been missing one since I moved to Maida Vale and away from my old favourite, The NLT. The New Inn is more local to Helena than to me, but it’s well worth the short trip…any place that gives me great food, Jenga, loungey seats, a great Rioja and 2 King Charles Cavalsiers to play with is absolutely fine with me.

With themed nights and accommodation too, this is definitely one to check out if you’re in the area.

The New Inn can be found at 2 Allitsen Road, St John’s Wood, NW8 6LA. T: 020 7722 0726 E:
