Hi de Hi campers! Pack your bags, put on your boots but forget the cold and the critters – now that sounds like my kind of camp dining.
Renowned pop-up collective, The Art of Dining, is back with a camping theme. The experience combines theatre, food and set design to create an immersive and interactive dining event to chase away the January blues and prove that the fun doesn’t stop at Christmas.
Hidden away in The Pickle Factory, near Bethnal Green you’ll find a beautifully designed set by Alice Hodge including lovely touches like a map menu, campfire games and rubber duckies floating in the bathroom skink. As you walk into the retreat you’re greeted by the sound of birds tweeting and handed a refreshing orange and prosecute cocktail (definitely my #1 camping essential). The quirky park bench seating puts you right into the spirit and so the night begins…
The delicious 5-course menu was carefully created by Ellen Parr with a camping theme – and I don’t mean baked beans from a can or having to go all Bear Grylls on it either. The food kept on coming and the portion sizes were great, just enough to keep you wanting more. My favourite course was the ‘breakfast’ – Moroccan style eggs & salsa with date & cumin flatbread, then ‘bedtime’ (desserts are always the best dish in my mind) hot chocolate with homemade hazelnut marshmallow and caramelised banana – unbelievably YUM!
It’s a great night and a fun alternative to an otherwise predictable restaurant reservation. The interactive dining make it a perfect date venue with no time for awkward silences- until your date hears you sing to the camp song! In fact the whole place was brimming with couples who obviously love the idea of getting wooed by a campfire – who knew?
So let the wine flow, the birds sing and the love blossom – it’s a must try in my books.
