This Little Lady's Travel Review of Ibiza (2011)

Once upon a time, when TLLWTL was a mere baby, I wrote about my love for Ibiza. It’s been one of our most popular posts over the years, with both regular readers and random searchers referring to it before they jet off on their hols. However, a lot has changed since then, and seeing as I just returned (SOB!) from yet another incredible holiday on my little island in the sun, I thought it was time for a little update.

Now, don’t get me wrong. Everything we loved about the island back then is still heavenly. Taking the time out to pack a picnic and head up to Es Vedra is never going to become less appealing. If you have a few Euro’s to spare, booking a bed and sipping champagne at Blue Marlin is the great way to spend the day. Es Vive is still one of our favourite hotels on the Island – KM5 is still a fabulous venue for dinner and lounging the night away…and I’m never going to fall out of love with watching the Sunset at Cafe Mambo – no matter how many years I return.

But things change on the Island all the time – and the last two years have seen a number of new additions making their presence known. Plus of course, every time you go, you learn something new, no matter how well you think you know the place.

Our first trip out this year was quite quiet, spent catching up with friends, lazing around the pool and drinking far too much Rose. However, these are some of the gems you NEED to know about if you’re heading out this Summer.

Ushuaia Beach Hotel.

No, I can’t pronounce it either, but believe me, everyone knows this place so you’ll soon be pointed in the right direction. Brand new, but rapidly becoming known as the destination of choice on the Island, it’s everything you could possibly want – except cheap. It’s definitely NOT that. However, if you want daily pool parties, huge stars (Usher and Idris Elba were both there while we were) and to hang out with the beautiful crowd – this is definitely the one for you.

The Hed Kandi Bar

Opened this year and situated just by The Egg in San Antonio, this cool bar is open all day and most of the night. Featuring DJ sets from some of Hed Kandi’s best DJs, as well as superb performances and HOT dancers, at night this place goes wild. It’s also the place to go for Hed Kandi merchandise, tickets and the Hed Kandi pre-parties. This is a great bar and if you’re staying on the San Antonio side of the island (which we did this time), it’s an absolute must-visit venue. Reasonable priced, Stylish and Fun. We like.

Ibiza Rocks House (at Pikes)

Pikes in an Ibizan institution. Anyone who’s been coming here for a while know of Pikes Hotel, some will have been lucky enough to have tales to tell about the place in its crazy hay day. While Tony Pike, the original hotels founder, may have sadly passed away, the rock n roll spirit of Pikes lives on in its new incarnation, Ibiza Rocks House. Andy and Dawn, the Ibiza Rocks founders, have renovated the hotel and now offer a piece of history with a modern twist. I’ve always loved this place and whilst I didn’t stay here this latest visit, I hope to soon. I’m definitely heading over for one of their famous afternoon BBQ’s when I return next month.

Sands Beach Restaurant

Sands is the latest venture from Hotel Es Vive’s owner, Jason Bull, and this is a man who knows exactly what works in Ibiza. Sands is a superbly chilled, stylish Beach Bar, with DJ’s spinning the latest tunes, fantastic food, delicious cocktails and huge sunbeds to lounge on, watching the beautiful people of Ibiza party the day away. I love it here. Such a good vibe – right in the heart of Playa D’en Bossa. Super cool.

So. Those are my top picks for now. I’m heading back out in less than a month and will write another travel review of Ibiza then, with the latest and greatest discoveries that time too. I’m planning a massage at Atzaro, a night out at Defected at Ushuaia, lunch at Amante, a trip to the Nassau Beach Bar and much, much more…I can’t wait!
