Last week, I had the good fortune to be whisked off to none other than Cannes, hot on the heels of the famed Cannes Film Festival. We were here to celebrate the opening of the new La Plage Du Majestic by La Folie Douce, who have been bringing together the best in creative arts, entertainment and haute cuisine from around the world since 1969 in the French Alps. Enough said – let’s get the party started!
Enjoying Provençal culinary delights at the Hôtel Majestic Barrière Cannes, home of the film festival celebrations
The Art Deco splendour of the Hôtel Majestic Barrière Cannes
My Cannes experience was kicked off to a wonderful start with an exceptional dinner at the Hôtel Majestic Barrière Cannes, home of the Film Festival celebrations, where we enjoyed simple and elegant Provençal cuisine delicacies by chef Maryan Gandon of La Petite Maison de Nicole, like the deeply earthy truffle cannelloni, the freshest seafood from the sea and plenty of free flowing Maison Mumm champagne to bring it all together in the spirit of true French joie de vivre. One of the original palace hotels on the French Riviera, we were surrounded by a truly magnificent backdrop of Art Deco splendour, palm trees and stunning sapphire pool where we people watched to our heart’s content.
We then boarded The Catamaran boat to go island hopping around the French Riviera, where we were taken to a magical island called Saint Margeurite (where apparently Jay-Z and Beyoncé are regulars). No doubt they must have been on one of the many yachts surrounding the island on the azure Mediterranean sea.
Loving the relaxed beach hut chic of La Guérite, where Jay-Z and Beyoncé are regulars
La Guérite, the restaurant on this island where we had lunch is really something else. Low key, built with local materials such as ocean-washed wood, seashells and stones that oozes beach hut chic, and respectfully blending in with the natural flora and fauna, it would almost be impossible to perceive the exclusivity that precedes it, but its true excellence comes in the details of its deceptively simple yet stunning flavours of its dishes. It is known for its spectacular seafood, particularly its signature dish Moules Marinière, sweet succulent mussels cooked in butter, garlic, French herbs and white wine. The dessert was equally delicious, with local seasonal strawberries and fresh lime marscapone cream. We paired this with the Maison Mumm De Blancs champagne, with its crisp and fresh notes that offset the flavours of this dish perfectly. This is what summer should taste like!
Finally, we celebrated the grand opening of the Folie Douce La Plage Majestic in style, with a spectacular show of amazing showstoppers and artists. We danced the night away on the beachfront to the pop of Maison Mumm champagne, known for its iconic celebrations with innovators such as Formula One® and DJ David Guetta, united by a passion for pushing the boundaries of the impossible. Through constant innovation the champagne house has pioneered a number of industry breakthroughs, including the world’s first digitally connected magnum, which intelligently activates a multisensorial experience of light and music to get the party started. Needless to say, this took the joy of celebration to a whole new level as champagne and music became one. Surrounded by dazzling lights and live upbeat renditions of our top pop tunes from the likes of Michael Jackson and Bruno Mars, it was truly a night to remember. There’s no better way to celebrate the heat of summer than dancing under the stars on the beach!
If you’re ever thinking of where to go on holiday in France, Cannes is without a doubt one of the most memorable and beautiful places to visit – definitely worth it.
