If you don’t have any plans today, do yourself a favour and take the trip to Little Venice (Warwick Avenue or Maida Vale tube station) where you’ll be in for a family style treat.
The canal is absolutely packed with 100+ narrowboats (decked out in more bunting than I’ve ever seen anywhere ever) for the Bank Holiday weekend, and the banks are heaving with stall-holders, refreshments, Morris Dancers and other brilliant festivities. There’s loads for the kids to do, from face painting to a huge paddling pool with amazing little motorised boats. I wanted a go. I wasn’t allowed. These things are never fair.
Apparently the Canalway Cavalcade has been happening for years – I’d somehow never heard of it but it’s a lot of fun. We got along quite late, just in time to watch the absolutely stunning sunset, copped a squat and watched part of the light parade – which was a sight to behold. 25 boats had made varying degrees of effort to deck themselves out with pretty lights and some rather half-hearted fancy dress outfits. While this may not sound like the best nights entertainment, it really was. There were hundreds of people out, even after dark, and the atmosphere was brilliant.
If you don’t have any plans, it’s definitely worth a visit, especially with temperatures expecting to reach 20º again today.
May even see you there!
