Restaurant: New Taxin Thai, Maida Vale

Tonight, the man and I ventured as far as…well, across the road, for a quick bite to eat at local Thai restaurant, New Taxin Thai.

Now, there is nothing fancy about New Taxin Thai. It’s all a little bit – errrm – local, with old furniture and paint that could do with a little bit of touching up and phones ringing and a general hubbub that makes you think it’s all a little disorganised.

However, the people are friendly, greeting us with a smile and chatting away to our fellow diners as they took orders and served food.

Which leads us on to the important bit. Food.

New Taxin Thai is not the only Thai restaurant in W9 but for us, it’s pretty much a go to for delivery – and this was the first time I had eaten in. We ordered the standards, nothing fancy. For me, Chicken Gyoza, King Prawns with Garlic and Pepper and some Stir Fried Veg, which we ended up sharing. For him; Prawn Toast, Coconut Rice and Thai Green Curry.

For me, the prawn toast was a little on the greasy side, but the Gyoza were really good. My Prawn dish was delicious – although the texture of the prawns was a little strange. Not bad…just soft in an odder than normal way. His Thai Green Curry was nice, nothing extraordinary by any means but a good tasting dish with tender chicken and a mild sauce with julienne ginger giving a subtle heat and a nice crunch. Rice was cooked well, vegetables in oyster sauce were done perfectly – retaining crunch and colour, flavoursome and generally very nice indeed, thank you.

The bill, including drinks, came to £40 so it wasn’t a cheap as chips dinner, but for a local date night meal for two it was enjoyable, cosy and the service was good. It’s not the kind of place I’d recommend trekking across London to find but if you live close by and want a Thai takeaway or a quick dinner – you could do a heck of a lot worse!
