If you needed an excuse to drink Malbec midweek, here it is.
Gaucho has marked World Malbec Day (17th April, yes, we missed it, but Malbec is for life, not just for one day) with a month-long menu that leans heavily into Argentina’s most famous export.
And before you roll your eyes and think “another themed menu”, this one’s actually worth your time.
They’ve teamed up with drinks writer and all-round wine authority Hannah Crosbie to curate a selection from Terrazas de los Andes, a winery based in the high-altitude vineyards of Mendoza.
Translation: these wines have a bit more going on than your average supermarket Malbec.
The line-up includes:
- Grand Malbec (2022) – full-bodied, balanced, with notes of violet, thyme, blackberry and citrus
- Reserva Malbec (2024) – richer, deeper, with black fruits, spice and chocolate
- Plus a Cabernet Sauvignon (2024) and Reserva Chardonnay (2024) for those who like to pretend they don’t always default to Malbec
Naturally, this is Gaucho, so the food isn’t playing a supporting role. The menu pairs these wines with some of their best-known dishes, including steak tartare, their signature marinated churrasco sirloin, and a dulce de leche Basque cheesecake to finish.
Heavy? Yes. Worth it? Also yes.
What we like about this is that it’s not just another “drink this because it’s a day” situation. It’s a bit of a reminder that Malbec isn’t just the safe option you panic-order on a date. There’s depth to it, variety, and—if this menu does its job—probably a few surprises too.
The menu runs for one month from 17th April and is available across Gaucho restaurants nationwide.
So if your current wine routine is stuck somewhere between “house red” and “whatever’s on offer”, this might be a decent upgrade. Or you can ignore it and keep pretending you know what “notes of blackberry” actually taste like.
