Quick Bites: Ed's Diner, Victoria Place

Last weekend, my best friend made a fleeting and rare visit from his home on the South Coast. We’d agreed to meet up in London…but when you only have a few hours in our great metropolis, where do you go? Neither of us live in the capital so the criteria for lunch was quick, simple and not going to break the bank.

He was wanting something relaxed (none of that fancy stuff for him) and seeing as we were at Victoria, the food court upstairs seemed the easiest option. Faced with a plethora of restaurants, we were lured by the bright lights and clean lines of Ed’s Easy Diner. While a food court doesn’t sound the most exciting of locations, this turned out to be a good decision!

From the moment we were greeted at the front door it was apparent we were going to be looked after. Edyta our server was both attentive and interested in us and made sure that my friend’s rather fussy tastes were perfectly catered for. I chose the chilli dog and it was huge, tasty and very reasonably priced. Even my picky friend (who only usually orders burgers) was impressed, saying maybe next time we went he’d try it. Praise indeed!

Ed's diner food

I’m not a pudding person, so I left the dessert to him, but was tempted enough by his delight at the chocolate brownie that I pinched a rich, moist mouthful – or two! Being a sixties themed diner it was a great touch to have a mini jukebox on each table that pipes music throughout the whole restaurant – just a pity ours didn’t work. Luckily there was one on the main counter so we could sing along with Elvis as we ate. And sing along we did. Even better all the money for each song choice goes to charity – currently Action Against Hunger.

I’ve worked in restaurants for years so know what I like, and that satisfying food doesn’t need to be posh. Ed’s was vibrant yet relaxed it was a very pleasing and satisfying lunchtime – especially when needing a quick, simple bite with someone who likes their classics, no messing.

I can’t say it would be the best place to take a date…but then…you shouldn’t want to take your date to a train station. For two mates grabbing lunch? This worked well.

Quick, simple and won’t break the bank. I’m pretty sure we will be back!
