Some of London’s most famous and fabulous restaurants belong to Caprice Holdings.
If you haven’t eaten in them, you’ll most certainly have heard of them. The Ivy, Caprice, J.Sheekeys, Daphne’s; the list goes on. VIP’s have been photographed walking in (and falling out) of these venues for years…and soon there will be a new hangout for us all to enjoy.

Later this month, General Manager Byron Lang will oversee the opening of Balthazar London in Covent Garden, nestled in the shadow of the Royal Opera House on Wellington Road. Head Chef Robert Reid’s French brasserie-inspired menu will include a selection of brasserie and bistro style dishes, along with a wide selection of fresh seafood.
Unusually Balthazar will also have two bakeries. The “Boulangerie” – which will sit next door to the Covent Garden restaurant – will sell artisan breads, pastries, sandwiches and salads to takeaway, overseen by Head Pastry Chef, Régis Beauregard (formerly of The Ritz) and Head Baker, Jon Rolfe (founder of the Flour Station). The second bakery will be located in Waterloo, under the railway arches on Hercules Road, and supply wholesale customers throughout London.
British export Keith McNally’s original Balthazar in New York has been wowing critics since 1997 – and he’ll be hoping to recreate that successful formula back here on home turf when the restaurant opens it’s doors in mid-Februrary. The reservation line will be open from 16th February (We’ll let you know the exact opening date as soon as we do.)
I love the more laid back sound of Balthazar, and am already looking forward to breaking open a fresh loaf of bread straight from those bakery ovens, drinking a glass of red wine and enjoy some affordable yet high quality food in the company of good friends. This will be a welcome addition to theatreland for sure.
